Introduction
When I first decided to go Fraser Hill, I was very hesitant and worried. It is because although internet has information regarding this birding paradise, much details are lacking. But thanks to MM, Sree etc ‘s help, I am able to pick up my courage and explore this wonderland twice. Hence I would like to share my experience here so those may venture with better confidence…
Getting there
The route I took is - By train, one can take an overnight train to KL. ( about S$ 80 return trip ). Find out more on http://www.ktmb.com. It will depart at night 2100hr and arrive at 0600hr in KL. Then change to the MRT equivalent to Rawang. (about RM5 single trip). This takes about 40mins. A pre-arrange Taxi Mr Bala will fetch me from Rawang (RM100 single trip) to Fraser Hill. Mr Bala telephone number : (60) 176564595 (609)3622936 Call him at least one week ahead to arrange for him to fetch you He is reliable.
I heard that if driving own car will take about 6hours from Singapore to Fraser Hill. But must bear in mind that the road up and down hill operates in alternate hours.
Book
Birds of Fraser’s hill by Morten Strange (about S$10)
Accommodation
Jelai Highland’s Resort
This place has bird wave in the morning. So it is perfect for photographer! Remember to tell them u are birder because u can see bird outside your room!
Standard room with 2 single bed is RM 90 weekdays and RM 100 weekends(starts on Friday!) Tel: 09-3622600
Blood suckers
Bring mosquito repellent and there are leeches in Fraser Hill! U can get Leech socks at the WWF office (approx RM 20)
Getting around
With equipment and getting to the waterfall, Gap and new road, u will need a vehicle. Mr Bala will provide the transport at RM 50 per day. But if u are just getting to 1 or 2 place, and he pick u up later, one can always bargain for less.
Food
Restaurant around has Chinese meals, RM 10 per meal is more than adequate!
Places and birds
Jelai Highland’s Resort
Bird wave start at 0630hr to 0800hr. so if u are staying there, get up early have a cup of coffee and stroll down stair to set up equipment. Fire away when the birds arrive! Birds include barbet, woodpecker, drongo, black n crimson oriole, green magpie, babbler, chestnut capped laughing thrush, silver ear mesia, long tail sibia, magpie robin, streaked spiderhunter, fantail, black throated sunbird
Hemmant Trail
Takes about 1 hour. Saw hawk cuckoo and large Niltava. This trip is easy to walk. I have tried several other trail but they are dark and can be difficult to walk with big lens.
New road and Gap road
Best time is about 0900hr to 1100hr. can be a challenging walk especially if walking uphill. U can try to arrange transport to pick u up. I saw mini vet, malkoha, black crested and mountain bulbul
Ye Olde Smokehouse
Black-throated Sunbird
Long tail sibia, streaked spiderhunter, fantail, black throated sunbird. BUT the coffee is very expensive!
Waterfall
I have no luck there but apparently during May, silver breast broadbill nest there!
Birds are usually present early morning or evening. So one may want to rest in the afternoon.
Anyone has anything to add or correct are most welcome
Happy birding!
